Viva Madiba

Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact.

The #MandelaDay campaign message is: “Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67 minutes.” So one minute is given for every year of Mandela’s public service. Nelson Mandela has been making an imprint on the world for 67 years, beginning in 1942 when he first started to campaign for the human rights of every South African.

As usual, across the world, people and organisations are gearing up for this year’s Mandela Day celebrations with ways to “pay it forward” of which some doesn’t require you to reach too deep into your pockets. Simple acts of kindness and generosity really goes a long way.

That’s exactly what we aim to do!

In light of #67Minutes4Madiba, we’ll be buying a night’s shelter at The Haven Night Shelter for every cleaning appointment that is scheduled to take place this Mandela Day. Any bookings made today (scheduled to take place at any other time) will also be considered as a donation to buy additional beds / night’s shelters.

A few of our team members will also be heading out to Milnerton beach today for a beach clean up for 67 minutes from 12:00. If you’re in Cape Town and have a few minutes to spare, we encourage you to join us and let’s fill up as many black bags as we can.

TEN THINGS YOU COULD DO THIS MANDELA DAY:

  1. Help out at a soup kitchen
  2. Donate blankets or clothes to those in need
  3. Take part in a community clean up (beaches, parks, etc.)
  4. Donate food / assist with packing food packages
  5. Visit an orphanage and read to / play with the kids
  6. Volunteer at a shelter or youth centre
  7. Sponsor / donate books to libraries or schools
  8. Take part in a sanitary pad drive
  9. Plant trees at schools or in and around your community
  10. Book a clean with SweepSouth and donate a night’s shelter at The Haven Night Shelter

With the incredible power to improve our own lives and those of everyone around us through our actions, let’s use that power for good!

What are you doing this Mandela Day?
