From hardship to hope: How a 27 year old domestic worker’s determination is transforming her life

In an era where technology has streamlined everything from shopping to scheduling, platforms that connect workers directly with clients are transforming the employment landscape. For informal labour sectors such as domestic work, these platforms are creating pathways for individuals eager to find meaningful work while balancing personal commitments.

One of the inspiring success stories from the platform is that of Dimakatso Mokoena, a 27-year-old UNISA student who epitomises resilience and determination. Dimakatso’s journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic, which left her unemployed and searching for ways to support herself and her family. After struggling to find work in retail, she came across Sweepsouth. Initially hesitant, she decided to apply, and in September 2021, she received an SMS inviting her to an interview.

“It was a turning point for me,” she recalls. “I passed the interview, and just like that, I could start working. I was finally able to earn and support my family again.”

Working as a domestic worker has allowed Dimakatso to balance part-time shifts with her academic commitments, as she works towards a Higher Certificate in Economics and Management Sciences. The flexible structure offered by Sweepsouth allows her to select shifts that suit her schedule, enabling her to focus on both her education and her role as a reliable income provider for her family.

For Dimakatso, her work goes beyond just cleaning. She sees it as a way to make a meaningful difference in her clients’ lives and her commitment to high standards and attention to detail provides a sense of personal satisfaction that motivates her daily, and has earned her praise from clients.

“Creating a clean, welcoming home is about giving people a space to recharge,” says Dimakatso. “My goal is to help my clients feel calm and energised when they come home. It’s fulfilling to know I’m making a difference in their lives.”

Dimakatso notes that both her work and educational pursuits have created a positive ripple effect within her family as her role as a SweepStar allows her to contribute significantly to her family’s well-being. Living with her supportive mother and siblings, she shares household expenses and provides a stable foundation for her loved ones.

“Working as a domestic worker has helped me support my family in ways I didn’t think possible,” she says. “The flexibility it offers me has also meant I am able to mentor my younger sister, be more present in her life by helping her make informed career decisions.”

This flexibility has also enabled her to pursue her dreams, including a future career in finance. Determined to complete her studies, she believes that her experience has laid the groundwork for even greater achievements.

“I’m passionate about my future,” she says. “I know my work now is a stepping stone to reaching my dreams.”

“Dimakatso’s story is a testament to the resilience of so many of our SweepStars, who balance personal responsibilities, education, and work with grace and determination,” adds Kriel. “When we hear stories like Dimakatso’s, it reaffirms our commitment to expanding these opportunities to even more people. We believe that by connecting workers with households, we’re creating a model that benefits individuals, families, and entire communities.”

Dimakatso’s journey from unemployment to empowerment exemplifies how technology-driven platforms can transform lives. Her story, along with the broader impact of Sweepsouth, highlights the importance of fostering connection, providing stability, and empowering individuals to build brighter futures. With every clean home and every life changed, the platform demonstrates the incredible potential of technology to create meaningful, lasting impact.
