It can be a hassle to keep kids entertained during the school holidays. It’s especially frustrating if the whole family is home while you’re working from there and having to meet deadlines. If you’re tired of hearing “Mom, I’m bored”, then here is a list of activities you can set up for your kids to do indoors during the holidays to keep them occupied and out of mischief.
Origami – The Asian Art Of Paper Folding
This can be a creative and fun pastime. All your kids need is a stack of paper and origami instructions and design ideas which can usually be found on YouTube or Pinterest.
Puzzle Building
Building puzzles is an activity that the whole family can enjoy together. Puzzles also have cognitive benefits for your children like learning attention to detail, better memory, increased IQ and problem-solving skills. It allows them the chance to learn to collaborate and work as a team.
Cooking And Baking
Get your kids involved in the kitchen and let them help you make tasty meals. This may also motivate them to help out around the house, meaning less work for you. It’s the perfect way for the family to bond by creating delicious meals such as pizza, tacos, burgers, and for dessert, pancakes and chocolate-covered fruits. There are loads that you can think of. Cooking with your kids can be a rewarding experience for the whole family.
Science Experiments
A good way to educate and entertain kids during the holidays is by making fun science experiments, such as a baking soda volcano, slime, instant ice, and others you can easily find online.
Movie Marathons
Another activity for the family during school holidays is a Disney movie marathon, with old to new Disney movies that you and your kids can enjoy together. There are also tons of movies and series on Netflix and Showmax that your kids will love.
Obstacle Courses
Obstacle courses make for great fun for the kids, and a great opportunity to test your building skills. If they are still quite young, you can make an entertaining obstacle course from pillows, cushions, blankets and mats for your little one to walk and crawl over, while adding obstacles for them to go under like the dining room chairs. Cardboard boxes opened on both sides can make great tunnels for them to crawl through. For older kids, you can make an obstacle course outside, using pieces of old wood, boxes, buckets, garden chairs, or anything that they can jump or climb over, go through, underneath, or around. You can tell the children to time each other through the course, creating excitement through competition.
Garden Picnics
Let the kids pack their own picnic baskets from the fridge and enjoy a picnic in the garden. This is a great way for them to spend time outside and soak up some sunshine.
House Camping
Let your children build a tent with blankets and sheets and set up a camping spot inside the house or out in the garden.
Treasure Hunts
Create an exciting treasure hunt by dropping treats around the house for your kids to find. Give them a map with clues and let them start the journey.
The holidays are a great time for playing board games, drawing, colouring, and even learning how to play a new instrument. There are loads of ways to keep kids busy during school holidays, keeping them active and entertained so you don’t have to worry about work deadlines.
