We think it’s safe to say that most of us have slowly but surely adjusted to this ‘new normal’ we’re facing but have you stopped to think about how you can no longer take a drive to a nearby resort or getaway over a long weekend?
For those who have decided to create their own long weekend, by taking a day off on Monday, and you’re now wondering what you are going to do with all this time on your hands, we’ve got you sorted. We’ve put together some ideas for you to turn your home or garden into your new favourite holiday destination!
Camping in the backyard
Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could go on a camping trip in the wilderness and take in the fresh air around you? Unfortunately, with lockdown restricting us from doing just that, we have to come up with plan B, that being pitching up a tent in the backyard. Prep everything you would usually need on a camping trip and huddle your family around in your backyard for a weekend-long camping trip. And don’t forget the marshmallows to roast in the campfires. The kids will absolutely love this little getaway!
And try to stay out of your house to experience the entire camping fantasy, make dinner outside and create that special potjie with the entire family, enjoy smores around the fire and roosterbrood – now that’s a full meal, without even having to step back inside.
Picnic in the garden
So we cannot make our way to the park for a lovely Sunday afternoon picnic, right? Well … you can head out to the shops to get some snacks and drinks, get your picnic blankie and set up a picnic in the comfort of your garden with the family. Don’t have a garden, just move around the furniture in your living room and move your picnic indoors.
Remember to bring along the board games and things for outdoor activities.
Spa day
For many, a spa day is a must when going on vacation – it helps you feel relaxed and pampered and without a doubt, gives you a good start to your week ahead. When heading to stores to stock up on some key staycation essentials, throw a few face masks, mani and pedi supplies and a few bath bombs and oils in your cart to prep for an at-home spa day.
It’s no secret that while we’re all doing our part to flatten the curve and stay at home, we’re missing our hairdresser, nail technician and our favourite beauty salon. We also know that when we look good, we feel good about ourselves, and we all know how important it is, especially during the time of Covid-19. We encourage self-love and self-care during this time, so take out the nail-polish, and create those DIY face masks, make yourself feel good, all in the comfort of your own home.
Virtual watch party
Why not spend the weekend binge-watching some series but not in your usual position – on the couch – there’s not much fun in that. Grab all the snacks you can find, drag your mattress into the living room with all the cushions, pillows and blankies you need to keep cosy and binge away. It will be like a little sleepover you used to have as a kid. You can even take it a step further and make it a virtual watch party by hopping on ZOOM call with family and friends.
Now to make it even more interesting and exciting, if you are one of the lucky few that has a projector, set up your little binge area where you are able to watch your favourite movies and series from a larger screen.
The point of it all is to make the most of your circumstances and with what you have. There’s no need to question what you could do next, we say do whatever makes you happy and it will make moments like these the most memorable.
